Everything You Need to Know About the STEM Capstone Project
The Capstone Project is the heart of Egypt's STEM school education system. Unlike traditional education where you study separate subjects, the Capstone integrates everything you learn into one real-world project that solves actual problems facing Egypt. Every semester, you and your team (3-5 students) will tackle a new challenge. You'll research real problems, design innovative solutions, build working prototypes, and present your work to external evaluators. This isn't just homework - it's real engineering work that prepares you for university and professional life.
The EDP is the scientific method engineers use to solve problems. Every Capstone follows these phases:
The Capstone determines 60% of your grade in every subject. Here's how it breaks down:
Biweekly assessments where you answer questions about your project. The best 4 out of 5 journals count toward your grade.
A scientific poster summarizing your project that you present to external evaluators at the exhibition.
An individual presentation delivered to the evaluators during the exhibition.
Your working model that demonstrates how your solution actually works.
A comprehensive document (4 chapters) that tells the complete story of your project journey.
Weekly entries documenting what each team member contributed to the project.
Every Capstone project must address one or more of Egypt's Grand Challenges. These are the most critical issues threatening Egypt's development:

Example: Medical devices, sanitation systems
Example: Smart farming, automated manufacturing

Each semester has a specific theme that determines the type of solution you must build:
Design and build a construction (dam, bridge, tunnel, building, etc.)
Focus: Understanding materials, structural engineering, physics of forces
Create an energy-capturing or converting device
Focus: Renewable energy, energy transformation, efficiency
Build a water or air treatment system
Focus: Chemical processes, filtration, purification methods
Create a smart sustainable system
Focus: Sensors, automation, feedback loops, IoT
Develop an ICT-based solution
Focus: Software, apps, communication systems, data
A typical Capstone semester follows this progression:
Read and analyze the semester's Capstone Challenge document carefully.
Choose 4-5 Grand Challenges and identify a specific, solvable problem.
Document your problem statement, background research, and project goals.
Generate multiple solution ideas with your team. Evaluate pros and cons.
Choose the best solution and create detailed designs including 3D models.
Document your solution design, materials, and methodology.
Gather materials and construct your working prototype.
Run experiments, collect measurements, and document results.
Process your data, create graphs, and draw conclusions.
Document your results, conclusions, and recommendations.
Design your poster summarizing the project.
Practice your 15-minute exhibition presentation.
Present your work to external evaluators and judges.
By the end of each Capstone semester, your team must submit:
A comprehensive 4-chapter document that tells your complete project story. Follows the EDP structure with Introduction, Methodology, Results, and Conclusion.
A visual summary of your project for the exhibition. Must include problem, solution, results, and conclusions in a professional scientific format.
A working physical model that demonstrates your solution. Must actually function and show how your idea solves the problem.
Weekly documentation of each team member's contributions. Proves everyone participated and shows your project's progression.
A 15-minute PowerPoint presentation delivered at the exhibition. Covers your entire project journey and findings.
